Cabinet Painting & Refinishing

Professional Contractors for Cabinetry and Millwork

Empire specializes in renewing varying cabinetry surfaces and millwork including oak. Update your kitchen cabinets or bathroom vanities without the cost of custom cabinetry. Your envisioned cabinetry is possible with proper preparation, spray application, or custom staining.

Based in Delafield, Empire Painting is known throughout Lake Country, Waukesha County, and the Greater Milwaukee area for unparalleled refinishing services on cabinets and interior woodwork.

Empire recommends Benjamin Moore INSL-X Cabinet Coat. We understand how important it is to choose the right color or stain. As such, we offer a free color consultation with an independent interior designer. For specialty projects such as glazing or stain changes, cabinetry samples will receive homeowner approval before full production. If a shade or stain is custom or no longer available, Empire is able to perform matching or work to get the formula just right with feedback.

All stain will have minor variance upon application, and each wood reacts differently to finishing. We discourage painting cabinetry and millwork black as it highlights imperfections and the natural grain.

Empire Painting's Cabinetry Process

The refinishing process typically requires two to three consecutive working days on-site for cabinet box preparation and finishing. Doors and drawer faces are returned approximately 10 business days later after undergoing finishing at Empire's Delafield workshop. The more time cabinets have to dry (cure), the better the final results.

Step 1: Prepare the Surface and Area

Assess the wood grain and condition. Cover floors, mask appliances, and drape the area to enclose and contain dust from sanding. Remove cabinet doors and drawer faces, labeling each for proper placement, wrap in packing blankets for protection, and transport to Empire's workshop.

Step 2: Prime, Caulk, and Putty

Before priming, perform a light sanding to ensure good primer adhesion. For oak cabinetry or millwork, back-brush primer to help infill the porous wood grain. Apply shellac bonding primer for a strong bond to the existing coating and to help block stains. Oak cabinetry receives a coat of Aquaclear grain filler to further reduce grain appearance.

All seams are caulked with a 55-year rated elastomeric caulk. Surface imperfections and nail holes are filled as needed with spackle and sanded smooth. Hardware placement holes can be puttied upon request for new hardware fittings.

Step 3: Apply Finish Coats, Perform Thorough Clean Up, and Touch Up

Painted doors and drawer fronts receive two coats of Benjamin Moore INSL-X Cabinet coat. Stain, gel stain, and clear coating is a different process. Altogether, the off-site finishing This process takes five to seven days. Once finished, doors and drawer fronts are carefully wrapped in packing blankets, delivered, and reinstalled. Empire typically performs cabinetry touch-ups as needed to both the cabinet boxes and the doors and drawer fronts one to two weeks from the reinstall date. This allows even more dry time as freshly painted cabinetry is still most susceptible to dings and marks within the first 10 days.
